Information Technology

  • The effective use of technology significantly benefits both the students and staff of Forney ISD in a variety of ways. Through technology, our students are provided enhanced modes of learning, while developing the skills that will be necessary to compete in their future society. Likewise, today's use of technology by district staff results in an overall increase in productivity, accuracy and creativity.

To ensure these benefits are realized, Forney ISD maintains a technology strategy that is fully integrated with district curriculum and professional needs.

  • MyFISD: Password Security and AUP for Staff

Posted by Howard Carlin on 11/16/2022 12:00:00 PM

It has come to our attention that some staff members are sharing their MyFISD account password with students so they can put their personal devices on District WiFi. It is a violation of the FISD Acceptable Use Policy to share your password with anyone - even your own child. By providing another person with your password, you are giving them access to your Email, Skyward, and Edugence. This is a direct violation of FERPA and can result in disciplinary action, including termination. Please make sure you are keeping your password safe and secure at all times.

  • Bitlocker: Increasing Security For Windows Devices

Posted by Howard Carlin on 11/14/2022 8:00:00 AM

Beginning today, Forney ISD IT will be enabling Bitlocker features on all Windows devices. Bitlocker is a security feature in Windows that encrypts data saved on the PC, preventing it from being inappropriately accessed in the event of theft, loss, or disposal.

There is no action required on your part for Bitlocker to be enabled. Once the process starts on your device, you may receive a prompt to reboot your PC, but you can decline and Bitlocker will complete its work after your next restart.

If you have any issues or questions regarding Bitlocker, please submit a Help Desk request.

  • Known Issue: Software Kiosk on Windows

Posted by Howard Carlin on 11/11/2022 8:30:00 AM

Forney ISD IT is aware of an issue preventing the correct installation of applications from the software kiosk on Windows devices. This issue is not present on all devices and does not affect all applications in the kiosk. We're currently showing about 50% of devices have the issue. We have identified the issue and are working towards a permanent resolution.

In the meantime, if you attempt to install an application from the kiosk and it does not complete, please submit a Help Desk request for an IT Support staff member to manually install the application for you.

    Vivi Specific Workaround:

Vivi provides two options for accessing their application without a permanent install, which are included in our Vivi: How to get started document under guest access and are also included below.

    1. You can run a portable version, which does not require installation. Available at https://www.vivi.io/downloads/enterprise/.

    2. You can run the progressive web app version, which does not require a download. Available at https://app.vivi.io/.

  • Fall Feature Updates!

Posted by Howard Carlin on 11/7/2022 8:00:00 AM

    Good Morning,

Fall is the time of year when most software companies release their "next big thing" and this year has not been the exception. Microsoft, Apple, and Google have released their respective Fall Operating System (OS) Updates and Forney ISD IT is happy to announce that by the end of the week, all of these updates will be available for supported devices. For more information about specific updates, continue reading.

    Windows 10 22H2

Arguably the strangest name of the bunch, Microsoft's update to Windows 10 doesn't bring much in the way of immediate change. Microsoft is making their big feature pushes in Windows 11 (not yet available in FISD) and Windows 10 22H2 is likely to be the first of many updates that prep systems for that impending upgrade. What it lacks in splash it makes up for in bugfixes and improvements to software stability. This update will be pushed to all managed devices on Wednesday, November 9th.

    macOS 13 Ventura

Apple has released their next version of macOS and, in addition to the fresh coat of paint that comes with each new macOS version, it includes a lot of under-the-hood changes to the operating system and applications. A full list of changes is available from Apple's website. This update will be pushed to all managed devices on Wednesday, November 9th.

    iOS 16

Apple's operating system update was delayed for a lot of devices as they worked on some last minute features, but iOS version 16.1 was finally released for all managed devices on October 28th. As a reminder, iOS updates do require user confirmation before the update begins, so keep an eye out for the red notification dot on your settings app and be sure to complete the update.

    chromeOS 107

Google handles their major Chrome updates a little differently from most other software companies. They don't wait to bundle all of their updates into a once-per-year update. Every month, a new version of Chrome is released and it comes with any new features and improvements that Google is ready to release at that time. This means we get access to new features as soon as they're ready, but sometimes it leads to new features being overlooked or missed as part of regular updates. To help, Google posts periodic round-ups of "What's new in chromeOS" on their website and in the Explore app on devices. ChromeOS 107 was released for all devices on Friday, October 28th.

If you have any issues or questions regarding OS updates on your device, please submit a Help Desk request.

  • Updates to Google Chrome

Posted by Howard Carlin on 10/6/2022 1:00:00 PM

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve the user experience and provide a more consistent feel across all devices, Forney ISD will be rolling out updates to Google Chrome over the next few weeks. The large majority of these changes will not be visible at first glance, but will provide some “under the hood” changes that will make Google Chrome a more consistent default experience across all Forney ISD devices.

One of the most visible changes will be the requirement that all users sign into Google Chrome with their MyFISD account before they can surf the web or add secondary accounts.

The IT Support team asks anyone who experiences issues or errors with Chrome please submit a Help Desk request for the application.
