The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) protects the rights of students with disabilities to have a free appropriate public education (FAPE). Special education provides specially designed instruction, supports and services to students with disabilities who require an individually designed instructional program in order to meet their unique learning needs. Forney ISD offers a continuum of programs and services intended to meet the individual learning needs of the students who are eligible for special education. There are 3 criteria that must be met in order to be eligible for special education services:

    1) a specific disability, identified in accord with the IDEA guidelines,

    2) the disability must adversely affect educational performance, AND

    3) specially designed instruction is necessary.

The IDEA identifies specific categories of disability which are used to determine eligibility for services:

    Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

    Orthopedic Impairment

    Deaf-Blind

    Other Health Impairment

    Deaf/Hard of Hearing

    Specific Learning Disability

    Emotional Disturbance
