Observing in Canvas

 Thank you for taking advantage of this unique view of your students' educational experience! It's great when families are involved in their students' academic endeavors. I wanted to share with you information on how to create an Observer account in Canvas, if you haven't already done so. You can observe all of your children using the same Canvas account/login information. Ready to get started?

You will need to add each student one at a time. 

Here, parents and guardians can find the following information:

• I Don't Have a Canvas Account and My Oldest Student is in Grades K-3
• I Don't Have a Canvas Account and My Oldest Student is in Grades 4-12
• I Have a Canvas Account but I Get a 403 Error
• I Have a Canvas Account and am Already an Observer. I Need to Add a New Observer for My Student in Grades K-3
• I Have a Canvas Account and am Already an Observer. I Need to Add a New Observer for My Student in Grades 4-12
• I'm Unique. None of These Match My Needs, OR I'm Still Having Password Issues and Can't Login

Observers can:

• View and read announcements
• View assignments index page
• View the calendar
• View the dashboard of your student
• View and read discussions
• View files unless they are locked
• View grades, view assignment due dates and comments, and print grades
• View modules and see due dates and point values
• View syllabus

Observers cannot:

• Comment on announcement or discussions
• Submit assignments or quizzes
• View course rosters
• View locked files or folders
• Join groups
• View unpublished courses

Observers can view the same content as the student they are observing, including module information. They can view assignments even if the student they are observing has not completed them unless the assignments are locked. Instructors do have the ability to further customize the links in the Course Navigation, limiting features available to students and observers.
