Important Traffic Information for the Aug. 11 Opening of Johnson & Willett Elementary
The new Johnson Elementary and Willett Elementary are set to open their doors to new students. Forney ISD and the City of Forney have been working together over the past year to prepare for August 11. We appreciate the community’s support as we get our students safely to and from school each day.
Johnson Elementary
10835 Walnut Lane
Forney, TX 75126
Hours: 7:50 a.m.-3:25 p.m.
Doors open at 7:20 a.m.
With Johnson Elementary just off of FM 548/740, ALL students in Grayhawk will qualify for bus service. In order to keep everyone safe, we are telling all families to NOT cross FM 548/740, as there is no pedestrian or bicycle crossing available.
The city and district have been actively meeting with TXDOT and requested both a light, school speed zone, and extended turn lane on FM 740 to make the zone safer for our community. TXDOT must conduct a traffic study before they will consider adding the light and extending the turn lane, which has to be conducted after the campus is open. TXDOT is also considering adding additional side striping and rumble strips this fall.
The city and district asked the developer to prioritize roads and sidewalks in Overland Grove for students walking to campus to allow for safe passage through the community. Sidewalk construction is underway and expected to be complete prior to the Aug. 11 opening.
In order to pull traffic off the road, additional stacking space was intentionally placed around the campus to allow for more cars in the drop-off/pick-up lines. Parents will turn in on Walnut, take a left at the first driveway to proceed single file past the front of the school until they get to the yellow gate. As they continue to loop around the school, the drive expands into 3 lanes for drop-off/pick-up at the back of the campus, and exiting on Walnut. Maps of the traffic flow show that once drop-off is completed, cars will need to take a right turn only off Walnut onto FM 548/740 out of the campus.
Willett Elementary
1896 Gateway Blvd.
Forney, TX 75126
Hours: 7:50 a.m.-3:25 p.m.
Doors open at 7:20 a.m.
In order to pull traffic off the road, additional stacking space was intentionally placed around the campus to allow for more cars in the drop-off/pick-up lines. Maps of the traffic flow pattern for student drop-off and pick-up are being shared with families.
Additional Information
The city council also has school zone lights on their upcoming Aug. 2 agenda to be installed around both campuses.
Also, the city and school have requested a school zone on FM 1641 near Henderson from TXDOT.
